Richard Wells took office as the tenth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh in 2000. Prior to his appointment, Wells served as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Indiana State University, and as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at West Chester University. During his tenure at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, Wells has engaged the academic community in developing a shared vision for UW–Oshkosh to becoming nationally known and admired for “engaging people and ideas for common good.” The University’s Center for Community Partnerships, Family Business Forum, Small Business Development Center and the Venture Center are a few of the ways the university is pursuing its vision. Wells is the founding Chair (2000-2005) of the Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance (NEW ERA), a consortium of executive leaders of northeast Wisconsin’s public universities. NEW ERA is enjoying statewide and national acclaim for large increases in degree program articulations, collaborative business service centers, graduation projects and alternative licensure/certificate programs for much-needed nurses and teachers. NEW ERA’s vision is to be a valued leader in collaborating to serve northeastern Wisconsin with quality, seamless education; providing essential resources for communities, businesses and government; and driving regional—and thereby state—economic development and stability. Wells is also a founding board member of NEW North (formerly the NEW Coalition on the Regional Economy), a consortium of northeast Wisconsin business leaders, regional workforce development professionals, chamber of commerce executive directors and educational leaders. In addition, he serves on the Oshkosh Area Chamber of Commerce, Affinity, and CHAMCO and United Way boards. Wells received his bachelor’s degree from William Penn College, his master’s degree from the University of Arkansas and his doctorate in sociology from Texas A & M University.
