Gary J. Wolter is chairman of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) and president and director of the MGE Foundation. He joined the company in 1984 as staff attorney and has served in numerous positions before becoming president and CEO. Before joining MGE, Wolter was in private practice with the law firm of O’Connor, Thomas, Hammer, Bertsch and Norby in Dubuque, Iowa. Prior to that, he held various positions with Interstate Power Company. Currently, Wolter is a member of the board of directors of the American Transmission Company, the board of trustees of the University of Wisconsin Research Park, the board of National Guardian Life Insurance Company, the Downtown Rotary Club of Madison and the board of directors of Wisconsin Utilities Association. In addition he is an active member of several community foundations including the board of directors of United Way of Dane County, the board of governors of the Madison Community Foundation, and the board of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce. Wolter also serves as vice chair of the board of directors of Meriter Health Services, Meriter Hospital, and Meriter Management Services and the chair of the 2006 United Way Campaign. His previous positions include membership on the board of trustees of Edgewood High School (2001-2004); board of directors of Edison Electric Institute (2001-2004); board of directors of Forward Wisconsin (2001 to 2004); chairman of the Madison U. S. Savings Bonds Program (2001); and chair of the Capital Campaign for the Genesis Development Corporation Business Incubator. Wolter has also served as president of the Milwaukee Chapter of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries and president of the Orchard Ridge Neighborhood Association. Wolter graduated maxima cum laude from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He received his law degree from the University of Iowa Law School and is a member of the Order of the Coif Honor Society.
